ATV Maintenance Basics
ATVs, or quads as they are sometimes called, are built to handle high-speed rides over rough terrain. Though ATVs are specially designed to overcome these unique challenges, they are a machine like any other and will eventually start to suffer wear and tear. Luckily, there are all kinds of things you can do to keep your quad in top shape no matter your level of mechanical expertise. That is why Open Road Outlet has put together this guide to basic ATV maintenance.
Changing the Filters
One challenge that ATV designers always have to keep in mind is the devastating effect that particles like dirt or sand can have if they get inside the engine. That is why every quad comes with a filter system, and why you should check it regularly. First, check the fuel filter below the fuel tank. While the fuel filter doesn’t need to be replaced often, it never hurts to check, especially on an older vehicle. Luckily, it’s easy to know when to replace the other filters by tracking your oil changes. The oil filter is replaced with every oil change, and the air filter is replaced every three or four oil changes.
Radiator Cap & Coolant
You may not have been aware that the radiator cap on your quad does more than just keep the coolant in your engine. In fact, it actually draws the coolant into the engine itself. If a seal becomes loose, you may see a dip in performance and your engine overheating. Take the time to check your cap to see if it needs replacing. While you are at it, check the coolant levels and top them off if they are getting a little low. Finally, if you discover that your radiator is leaking, contact a mechanic immediately.
Wiring
It’s obvious that all of the bouncing and jarring of a typical ATV ride might be hard on the suspension, but that’s not the only component you should be checking. Occasionally take a quick look at your quad’s wiring harnesses. This important part keeps the vehicle’s electrical components functioning. Be warned that wires can be shaken loose after only a few rides. Luckily, a little bit of duct tape can quickly and easily secure any loose wiring, so you won’t have to worry about accidentally snagging a branch.
An ATV is a complicated machine with many parts. Always check your user manual before trying to fix anything yourself.
