Whether you are tearing up the trails in an ATV or checking up on your property using your side-by-side, it is very important that you wear a helmet. Not only does it protect your face from wind fatigue and insects, it will help protect your head in the event of an accident. Of course, it can be difficult to know just what kind of helmet is right for you. That is why Open Road Outlet has created this guide to make finding the perfect powersports helmet a walk in the park.

Different Types of Helmets

There aren’t any helmets on the market made specifically for ATV and UTV riding.  However, most riders simply use a motocross helmet. Motocross helmets are lightweight and breathable, yet they still offer protection in the event of a collision. Some quad riders choose to use motorcycle helmets instead. While they offer adequate protection, they often aren’t as breathable. One type of helmet you should definitely not use is a bike helmet. These kinds of helmets won’t protect important areas like your neck in the event of a collision.

Riding Usability

While online shopping is more convenient, you should look for helmets in person rather than online, since trying on a prospective helmet to test the fit is vital. A poorly fitting helmet may become claustrophobic when worn for long periods of time or slip down and cover your eyes if it is too loose. Often, these problems only become obvious after you’ve spent some time on the trails, so always keep your receipt in case a return is needed.

Fit and Comfort

There is no standard sizing system for helmets, so if a size four helmet from one manufacturer fits you perfectly, a size four helmet from a different manufacturer might not fit you well. Use a tailor’s measuring tape to measure the circumference of your head just one inch above the eyebrows. This number will help you find a well fitting helmet.

When you try on a helmet, tighten the chin strap and shake it around a bit. If you can slide off the helmet without undoing the strap, or you feel that you have too much extra room, it means you need a smaller size. Another tip is to try to fit one finger between your forehead and the helmet. If you can, the helmet is too big. It is normal for the correct size to feel a bit snug.

Goggles vs. Facemask

When you have found a size and style that you like, it is time to choose between goggles and a face mask. Facemasks offer more seamless protection, but have a tendency to fog up at times. While some types of helmet will come with the facemask already installed, most motocross helmets are designed to accommodate goggles. This can actually be a benefit because it allows you to choose goggles based on how well they fit your eyes. Some goggles have extra features like anti-fogging lenses, UV filtering, and lots of ventilation, so seek those ones out if you are interested.

Replacing a Helmet

Helmets are an important piece of safety gear. If your helmet is cracked or otherwise damaged, you should replace it immediately. Even if no obvious wear and tear is present, some experts recommend that you replace your helmet once every five years or so.
